Geoclassical plants geometry at the core of SEV's design process, simultaneously turning to age-old and emerging methods of processing points, lines, angles, surfaces, and solids. This study can be seen to divide into two clear collection stories under a consistent pastel palette; the one, a quiet reworking of classic pyjama stripes through the off-setting and juxtaposing of the distance between each vertical line or block of line, the other, a venture into the future of digital pattern generation.
The latter comes courtesy of a collaboration between SEV and Danish Graphic Designer, Christian Zander, a.k.a the Emperor of Antarctica (EOA), which came about organically as the trio sought to generate complex and non-repeating tiling patterns. EOA had already created his own processes to enable infinite possibilities of tile arrangements with magnificent aesthetic appeal, so becoming the perfect candidate. The majority of key collection pieces were born from this cross-pollination of ideas; warping archetypal shirt stripes through the lens of non-periodic tiling.
For Autumn & Winter 2014 Sidian, Ersatz & Vanes investigate how our evolutionary visual perceptions of the world do not always truly represent that which can be recorded by empirical measures - Abstraction is ultimately real.
Implementing a study of Optical Illusion and warped experience as a design parameter informs the choice and interplay of colour, and the motifs, that surface throughout the collection.
